New Collection Containers At Shetland Site

John Lawrie Group has continued to invest in its operations on Shetland 11 months after taking control of the Rova Head metal recycling facility in Lerwick.

It has invested in excess of £50,000 in purchasing a number of new metal containers of varying capacities. The units will be used to collect scrap metal from around the Shetland Isles and transport it to Rova Head for processing.

John Lawrie Group acquired the Lerwick site in December 2017 and made significant investment in new equipment and the site’s infrastructure at the start of 2018, ahead of it reopening for business in February. Since then, demand from customers for processing scrap metal at the facility has exceeded the company’s expectations.

Servicing the needs of local businesses and residents, the Rova Head facility accepts all types of ferrous and non-ferrous metal. This includes scrap metal from construction projects, redundant oilfield and subsea related items, the agricultural sector and any general metal products no longer fit for purpose. Marine-related products such as new and used anchor chain, shackles and kenters, and used wire rope are also handled, along with piece small items and larger oilfield materials and structures from decommissioning projects.

By processing and recycling the metal it reduces the amount of waste being sent for disposal, thereby helping to create a circular economy by keeping waste materials in use for longer. After the metal has been processed in Lerwick, it is shipped from the town’s port to steel mills in Europe for smelting. Utilising secondary raw materials in this way means that the natural environment is also being preserved as less ore is being mined to create new steel products.

Since taking over the site John Lawrie Group has shipped 12,000 tonnes of processed metal from Lerwick to European steel mills.
