Staff from John Lawrie Group have raised over £1,200 for charity after taking part in a recent fundraising challenge.

Ten employees from the Aberdeen-headquartered metal recycling, decommissioning and steel tubulars business took part in the Friends of Anchor Wipeout event at Hazlehead Park.  Calling themselves the ‘John Lawrie Recyclable Heroes’, the group battled a dozen obstacles in the ‘It’s a Knock-Out’ style event which took inspiration from TV show ‘Total Wipeout’.

The group donned superhero costumes as they ran, bounced, slipped and slid their way round the action-packed obstacle course, which included inflatable slides and water hazards.  Each of the 12 challenges the team faced were designed to encourage teamwork, whilst also testing each individual’s agility and problem solving skills.

Throughout the day, which was the final day of the three-day Wipeout event, the colleagues competed against 17 other teams, collecting points for the speed with which each of the 12 tasks was completed.  The team from John Lawrie Group finished with the fourth highest overall points tally on the day.

Participating in the energetic event was the idea of accountant Sharon Robertson, who recruited nine willing volunteers from John Lawrie Group’s office staff.  So far, the 10 ‘Recyclable Heroes’ have raised £1,245 for Friends of Anchor, which supports cancer and haematology care in north-east Scotland.

John Lawrie Group has been a long-standing supporter of Friends of Anchor.  Last year, it backed the charity’s 20 for 20 Anchor Voyage appeal, sponsoring the ‘Big Hero’ anchor.  The appeal saw 20 specially designed and decorated anchor statues displayed across north-east Scotland.  The campaign aimed to generate awareness of the charity’s work and to raise funds for a £4.5million project to attract and recruit a world-class oncology research team to north-east Scotland.

Commenting on behalf of the team, Sharon said: “We are thrilled to have raised over £1,200 for Friends of Anchor, a charity which plays a very important role in cancer care and treatment in north-east Scotland.  The geographic areas the charity covers aligns with where John Lawrie Group has operations, so we are proud to once again support Friends of Anchor.

“Wipeout was great fun and the whole team thoroughly enjoyed the day, even if we did discover muscles we didn’t know existed.  It was a fun way to fundraise and the team enjoyed it so much that we have already signed up to participate in the 2019 event.  We are very grateful to everyone who has donated money, their support is really appreciated.”
