Little heroes from Ferryhill Primary gather at the 'Big Hero 20' anchor sponsored by John Lawrie Group

Ferryhill Primary, winners of Friends of ANCHOR’s school design competition, marked the final week of the 20for20 Anchor Voyage with heroic efforts to form the longest human chain Duthie Park has seen in recent times.

Over 150 pupils descended on Duthie Park to visit their anchor ‘Big Hero 20’, for one final celebration alongside the John Lawrie Group, who sponsor the anchor.

The fun packed outing saw some of the pupils donning their personally created superhero masks and linking arms to form a human chain and then morphing into the shape of an anchor.

The John Lawrie Group has been delighted to support the cause and offered a competition alongside the park activities for the pupils to engage in.

Ferryhill pupils were asked to design their own anchor on paper having been inspired by the Anchor Voyage over the summer.  The three top designs all received family cinema vouchers with the winning pupil receiving also receiving a family meal voucher.

Nicola Smith, from Ferryhill Primary said; “The pupils returned from the summer break with great stories of having visited many anchors throughout the north-east. Many talked about which ones they enjoyed and of course our own one was a huge favourite. They were so enthusiastic that we wanted to come up with another idea to get involved with the campaign before it came to an end this week. We worked with Friends of ANCHOR and the John Lawrie Group and thought we could impress with our strong community links by literally forming a large human chain. In addition, we wanted to attempt to form an anchor shape to represent the importance of coming together for a greater cause.”

Operations Director at John Lawrie Group, Dave Weston, said of coming on board the campaign; “As long-time supporters of Friends of ANCHOR, we felt this was an anniversary campaign for a worthwhile cause and one that is close to our hearts with family members receiving treatment in the ANCHOR Unit.

It has been fantastic to see the amount of engagement around the ‘Big Hero 20’ anchor and we feel it’s been an incredible opportunity to raise awareness for a charity like Friends of ANCHOR that does so much in the lives of cancer patients across the North-east.”

The 20th anniversary campaign has seen thousands of visitors across the North-east of Scotland, Orkney and Shetland representing the ANCHOR Unit’s catchment area. Kirsten Horne, Campaign Officer said; “The Anchor Voyage has taken so many people on their own personal voyage. We have been overwhelmed with the messages of support and encouragement, as well as donations, throughout the campaign period and we look forward to welcoming the public to see all 20 anchors together when they are showcased at Marischal Quad during the October holidays.”

The Duthie Park day will represent the final stages of the campaign as the mainland anchors are being uplifted from the beginning of next week before they conclude their journey at the Homecoming Voyage at Marischal College from 16 – 28th October.

The campaign has seen nearly £1,300 of public donations so far through our ‘Text to Donate’ option (Text ‘ANCH20 £5’ or £10 to 70070). Every penny raised through 20for20 initiative will go directly towards Friends of ANCHOR’s Dream Big campaign.

Ferryhill Primary applied to take part in the project alongside 19 other schools but won over a panel of judges with their innovative super hero idea. Their design titled ‘Big Hero 20’ – a play on the film Big Hero 6 – takes on a superhero theme in the form of superhero masks.
