  • REMOVAL OF CONCRETE, SIZE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING OF RISER BASES FROM MAERSK OIL’S GRYPHON FIELD AT PORT OF MONTROSE.

This project involved the downsizing, removal and recycling of four subsea Riser Bases with a combined weight of 393 tonnes. The work was carried out by John Lawrie over a five day period at the Port of Montrose. A site specific Method Statement detailing how the work would be carried out together with associated Risk Assessments and Operating Procedures were prepared by John Lawrie for approval by the Client and the Port Authority prior to the work commencing.

As the pictures demonstrate, the Riser Bases consisted of a heavy steel sectional base frame which were filled with a very dense concrete, and flexible pipe ends located at the top of the steel frames. The pipe end sections were removed and the concrete broken out of the steel sections by means of mobile machines fitted with concrete breaker heads. The steel sections were then size reduced and all of the material loaded and transported off-site for full processing and recycling.

”A total of 98.92% of the materials were recycled.“

Maersk’s Project Safety & Environmental team worked closely with all of the relevant parties involved with daily site inspections and safety conversations undertaken, leading to an incident free operation.
